The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), the pork industry trade group, supports the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, a bill introduced by U.S. Animal welfare groups say Proposition 12 is necessary because some sows and hens are housed in cages so small they cannot turn around. "We ultimately don’t believe the EATS Act is aligned with progress in animal welfare," Carey said. Hormel Foods <HRL.N> and Tyson Foods (TSN.N) did not respond to questions about the EATS Act. All of its 750 ranchers are in compliance with Proposition 12, said vice president of communications Kerri McClimen.

Egg prices fell by almost 11% in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday, following a 7% decline in February and delivering relief from record-high prices over the winter. The decrease is largely due to a recovery in egg production and weaker consumer demand, said Brian Moscogiuri, global trade strategist at Eggs Unlimited, an egg supplier. Egg prices rose more than those of almost any other consumer good or service last year, in percentage terms. In a sign of the times, comedian Trevor Noah asked popstar Taylor Swift at the Grammy Awards in February if her fans could help reduce the high price of eggs. That's more than double the price in February 2022, when a dozen eggs cost $2, but is down 61 cents from $4.82 in January 2023, which was a record high.
Matthew Hatcher | Afp | Getty ImagesWhy egg prices increased rapidlyThat dramatic increase in egg prices, economists say, largely stems from a disease called highly pathogenic avian influenza — known as bird flu. It reappeared in the fall last year, crimping egg production while heading into peak demand season for eggs around the winter holidays, experts said. watch nowLower prices now partly reflect a decline in consumer demand early in the year, which is a typical seasonal pattern, said Brian Moscogiuri, a global trade strategist at Eggs Unlimited, an egg supplier. There also hasn't been a new confirmed case of avian flu among commercial table-egg farms since December, giving suppliers some time to recover. Egg prices may pop again around Easter
To offset inflation, the deli has added a 50-cent surcharge to credit card purchases and increased prices on many items in the store, including cartons of eggs. The avian flu virus can be spread by wild birds mingling with poultry flocks, but also through contaminated clothing and equipment. But the loss of flocks, as well as increased operational costs, including labor and fuel for transportation, have eaten into the increased revenue. "Corn and soy are the key ingredients in producing an egg, because that is the feedstuff that egg layers eat." As of mid-February 2023, wholesale eggs prices have fallen by more than 50% since December.

Its Midwest Large White Egg price benchmark is a widely cited barometer in the egg industry. On average, it takes about four weeks for retail prices to reflect wholesale price trends, Rubio said. Retail prices tend to be less volatile than those at the wholesale level. For every 10% decrease or increase in wholesale egg price, consumers can expect retail prices to shift about 2%, on average, Rubio said.
Yet chicken prices fell in October. It may seem counterintuitive that egg and chicken prices moved in opposite directions. The last bout was in 2015, when a record 50.5 million birds were impacted, the CDC said. Elevated egg prices "could last into the first quarter of 2023," Lapp said. 'Broilers' are less affected by flu than 'layers'Meanwhile, chicken prices retreated in October, falling by 1.3% during the month.
